Research suggests that people listen through four different dominances, or habits. One of them is we listen for information and how it's going to affect the people involved. A third way that we can listen is analytically; analytical listeners typically listen for all the details. The fourth listening dominance, or listening habit is conceptual. And these individuals listen to and listen for how the big idea or the big picture can be applied in the future.
