If the nationalists had won quickly, as was widely expected, nothing would have been settled. The irony is that the Left sought to permanently destroy the Right ended up doing the opposite. Franco's governmental system involved an indirect and cooperative scheme of representation. He used the movement to keep a firm lid on all segments of nationalist support.
