The Importance of Modesty
When I was growing up, the worst thing I heard about a woman is she's parading herself around. So you do not want to parade yourself around. Modesty is like just baked into us. My first novel was my version of Cannery Row. And all the people that I know are ordinary people. They're not fancy and they're not famous. The tall weed gets caught. It's really, it's very Appalachian.
