HAP 30 - Dualist Personality - Anton Wilhelm Amo

History of Philosophy: India, Africana, China

CHAPTER

The Giraffe Is the End Determined by an Intentional Action of the Mind

For Amo, the mind does indeed interact with the physical environment, but in a way that is entirely active. Polyn Hontunji sees reason to celebrate what he describes as Amo's direct and frank dialogue with the great philosophical works of his time. What is disappointing then is the fact that Amo as a result of his historical circumstances could only ever aim his philosophical writings at Europeans. These works were not offered up for the purpose of a conversation among his fellow Africans.
