Pickett's Charge was the last ditch effort that the Army of Northern Virginia ditched against the Army of the Potomac, at Gettysburg. In World War I, these sort of assaults were accompanied by effective cascading artillery. A rolling barrage is essentially dropping bombs in front of you as you walk, so you get the enemy to duck. That's the whole point.
