The Importance of Respect in Politics

The first stanza of Hoffer's "Cassiopeia and Orion" is a new one to me. The idea that that which is difficult preserves democracy, pay respect to the intelligence of this citizen basics are not condescension. That underpins so much of what my experience was in political office. I mean, repeating a lie or repeating something that I didn't believe isn't more respectful than telling somebody the truth.
