The Importance of Yorick in Shakespeare's F
Carol Roger: Yorick has achieved great importance, and you have had great importance to it. Why do you think that is? Yorick makes a late entrance in the play. This is a play that will not leave Shakespeare alone. It's twice as long as any normal, early modern play. And Shakespeare keeps adding characters, introducing characters. We understand in this back story that Yorick was a kind of surrogate father to Prince Hamlet. But whether F was adapted by the actors or by Shakespeare, we don't know.
