Mao was not a democratic leader, he was the president of authoritarian leader. He fled to Taiwan and brought the Republic of China with him to Taiwan. After the defeat, he tried to reform, but he maintained those authoritarian role in Taiwan until 1980s. But it's still the second largest party in Taiwan, right? Yes, it's new. Now, it's not the power in the democratic competition. But Taiwan issue was left by the history. In fact, the US involved very deeply from the very beginning - even beyond the Chinese civil war.
