The Pyramid of Managers in the Fast Food Industry
Tiffany Polisser worked long shifts at Panera as a manager from 5am to late in the afternoon, ending her week with over 50 hours on the clock. She wasn't actually paid for those hours because she was a manager, which was a salaried position. Federal law requires employers to pay time and a half over time to hourly workers after 40 hours,. Most salaried workers whose salary is below a certain amount are currently about $35,500 a year. Companies need not pay over time to salaried employees who make above that amount if they are bona fide managers.
