The first USDA nutrition guidelines came out in 1894. They were written by someone we have talked about before on the show, whose name is Wilbur Olin Atwater. The main problem at this point in US nutrition is that people are not eating a wide enough variety of foods. So they were trying to get people to think more broadly about what they were eating.
In the 1990s, the Food Pyramid was one of the most recognizable symbols in nutrition education. But where did it come from? Why was it created by the agriculture department? And why did it tell us to eat a whole loaf of bread every day?
