The Ukrainians are essentially the Kurds of Eastern Europe, a people whose nation never existed except in the minds of a people. But unlike the Kurds, the Ukrainians ultimately succeeded in their nationalist aspirations. Most Galicia and Ruthenes spoke Ukrainian, nearly all were Greek Catholic. Who we think of as Ukrainians today also include a closely related group: Ukrainians living in the Russian Empire east of Galicia.
