The only way to understand your enemy is to love them even a tiny bit. Yankil may well have been an abstract enemy for taras being a Jew but he was a personal friend because years ago before the events of the story yankil had helped taras get his brother out of prisoner of war in by Polish forces. There aren't many proper unaccordures left in the world and it is a different way of viewing the world.
