The Great War in 1914

Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation in 18 63, which freed three point five million people from slavery in the confederate states. Many former slaves were still alive here now on the outset of world war one and their sons and grandsons would soon be drafted to fight for the country. This would have a profound impact in places like new york city, where the black population would almost triple between the years 19 hundred and 19 20. In fact, half, or even most, of the african american population would live in harlem.
