Seuzhan Liu was born in 1963, the Chinese Cultural Revolution starts in 1966. His parents sent him to live with relatives elsewhere to keep him away from violence that happened during that. The experience of being separated from his family and witnessing this government violence is like foundational to this work as I understand it. And he's also a prolific translator partly because of the notoriety that he got for translating the three body problem by Big Lu.
