The History of Material Design

I was thinking about when, when did the desktop or the kind of more universal aspect of material design come into it? Because it was very much Android projects in the beginning. But now we're seeing, you know, Google itself is rolling out on desktop interfaces and other tools are adopting material design across platforms. When did desktop hit you? Was it always there? It was actually there very, very early on.
