The History of Salt Cod

By the mid 1500s 60% of all fish eaten in Europe was cod and it would stay that way for the next 200 years. Early European explorers described these waters as so teeming with fish they could walk on their backs. The Catholic Church had 150 different fast days in its calendar and those were the days when you were to abstain from meat.
