In the first half of the movie, we see television footage a lot. We get a lot of information about what's going on with the conflict by them watching the t v. And i think that sort of connects through to this in that, like, his perceptions of this time looking back have a lot to do with this black and white footage. That's how he sees the troubles in his mind, because that's how they appeared on television to him.
