Is Fixed Rate Pacing a Good Choice?
fixed rate pacing doesn't need to sense the underlying rhythm because it keeps firing off no matter what the heart is doing. I'd probably stick the rate at 70 beats per minute and that allows you to kind of go up and down on the rate depending on the patient's response once you've gained capture. We're going to gradually bring the amplitude up in 5 or 10 milliamp increments and you'll see the muscles of the chest wall starting to contract. That shouldn't be mistaken for electrical capture of the heart it's very different. And we need to keep increasing that current until we obtain electrical capture, called the pacing threshold.
