The Pursuit of Pleasure

We can be motivated to do things because we think we ought to do them. We go to watch King Lear not because it brings us pleasure, but because of the artistry and language. The tragic poet's task is not really to generate in the audience a peculiar species of pleasure. What he should have said, and perhaps arguably what he means, is that the tragic poet aims at giving us a certain kind of insight.
