The Cecil Hotel: A Place of Disdain

First opened in 1924, entrepreneur William Banks-Hannner poured around a million dollars to build a luxurious new hotel. The Cecil now offered low cost rooms for short and long term guests,. tenant stayed in single rooms and shared bathrooms. At least eight guests have fallen to their deaths from windows while at the Cecil. In 2017, the Cecil was declared a historic cultural monument or landmark by the LA City Council. There were plans to turn it into a luxury hotel, but those fell through. Simon Barron collaborated with the Skid Row Housing Trust to then turn the hotel into affordable housing on December 14, 2021.
