Lee's View on Enslavement
Robert E. Lee famously said that slavery was an evil institution, but it's also important to say that he famously also said that it was a necessary institution. He prayed for a day that God would end slavery, but he also essentially excused himself from responsibility for bringing that day about. What he essentially wanted was to have as little to do with the institution as possible. But what most entangles in the institution is the will that his father-in-law leaves in 1857.
