The Tomato Pills Are a Good Alternative to Calamel and Calomel

i think the tomato pill probably had very little actual medical merit, especially for the bilious diseases hthey were said to counteract. But it seems to me that simply by being offered as an alternative to calamel, tomato pills, or just tomatoes, might have done significant medical good because calamel was so bad. So if you're taking something that does nothing, instead of taking calamel and getting mercury poisoning and gangrenous flesh and rotting gums and all that, that actually does seem like an upgrade - even though this is probably not useful as medicine.
