Is Progressive Islam Bankrupt?

I understand the visceral emotional reaction by many of my critics is because of the fear of progressive Islam. I've never been a fan of progressive Islam and I can't see myself going that way. The Quran and Sunnah are our sources. That's the whole point of us being Muslim. Does this mean that somebody who interpreted the Quran Sunnah 200 years ago, that interpretation is binding on me? What if that person was Ibn Taimiya? My admiration does not become falling in love with him subsequent to following everything he says. He is not one whom Allah sent.
