This was an incredibly diverse place in the first millennium BC. There were people living in Mesopotamian cities that were already thousands of years old who wrote using a venerable cuneiform script. Even if you think you know the stories of Rome and China, I doubt you're highly familiar with the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Bebylonian empires or the Pazadic culture of southern Siberia.
