In the nineties, private equity returns were higher than the market. But over the last 15 years, they have not beaten the public markets. This is because of the secretive nature of the business where a lot of the facts are only available through data and services are totally paywalled. The myth has perpetuated that these guys run in these funds are geniuses who are hitting the cover off the ball.
