The Importance of Midwesternness in Comedy

Everything funny was getting my attention on television. I was lucky to get on there before he had left the air. To be in a kid from Nebraska, that was like getting anointed. Ring Lardner wrote vernacular stories of illiterate ball players and sort of grifters. The Midwestern sensibility was more, I think, storytelling than the Vaudviliens who came out of the Jewish tradition of comedy.
