The free energy principle is a formal description of how life resists entropy across scales by minimizing surprise. The bounds of our moral circle need to expand beyond our species, beyond other sentient beings, and encapsulate all of life. Researchers at King's College London made two artificial intelligence players compete against each other in a version of the first person shooter, Doom. One of the bots was a reward maximizing agent, the other driven by the free energy principle. This knowledge is being used to train artificial intelligence systems, and seems to be highly successful.
