The Kepler space telescope was launched in 2009. It discovered 2,662 exoplanets and after nine years, way beyond its expected lifetime, Kepler ran out of fuel. Its data helped astrobiologists conclude that there may be 11 billion Earth-like planets orbiting sun-like stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
