Paganism, it seems, which really ought to be called Hellenism, was perpetually on the decline. The Olympian pantheon is little more than an alternately vicious and hilarious prelude to Christianity. From a historical perspective, obviously Christianity did take over the Mediterranean and continued to grow. But if we read the Homeric epics and later works of Greek literature, we make a couple different kinds of mistakes.
