The Origins of the Clock Bell in the Monastery
Mumford theorizes the clock bell in the monastery is the first turning time and monk's labor into a unit that can be quantifiable. The book talks about the influence of that structure in the monastery. There's a really amazing example at the end where there's something called a noon gun, which is this like a cannon that fires every day at noon. It was originally to have all the ships like sink their clocks.
