George and Lenny's Relationship
The book acknowledges that even though it's not actually what you understand to be going on. So the basis of their relationship is that George knew Lenny's aunt Clara who has died at some point. And so like George had to take care of Lenny. The problem is that he is a very big and strong person and he often kills them when he's petting them.
