The Complexity of Cellular Automata

Kaufman and Wolfram did a bit more sort of work on like, uh, cellular automata. Those are systems that produce baffling complexity from seemingly very simple initial conditions. They don't come up much again but they exhibit many of the same characteristics as adaptive systems.
