In the last 20 years when I've been in academia, I moved from neural networks into philosophy. When something emerges rapidly, it's very hard to predict where it's going. So you might actually not know how to push it very well. This is the calling-rich dilemma in the policy of technology. But you have a chance of getting that influence. Even though you might not know where to push it, at least by having been part of that, you can later own exert some influence once you have a better idea where you actually want to be going.
