What's the Difference Between a Group and a Gene?

Turchin would say it's all perfectly explicable if we inherit cultural traits that like genes pattern our behavior, and they're selected for at the group level rather than the individual level. A group here then can't be understood anymore as just a series of individuals carrying their own genes but people who have the same morality or approach to life. That has so much value in the eyes of these individuals that they're willing to sort of bind themselves together with people who have no genetic relatedness to them at all. The groups perceive one another as distinct, often on the basis of differing belief, differing allegiance to a different moral code.
