The Panopticon and Utilitarianism
Bentham's panopticon was based on the principle that a well-ordered prison would be one in which prisoners could not see who they were being observed by. His critics have often said Bentham prioritizes quantity over quality, doesn't discriminate between types of happiness or pleasure. He is criticized as the person who famously thought that pushpin and poetry were just as good as each other.
