The 1770s was the right time for the colonies to declare their independence. By then, they had a population of two and a half million with an 8% year on year growth. It was very difficult for an army that never amounted to more than about 35,000 men to subjugate the United States. Admittedly, the 13 colonies didn't go very far inland up until that point.
