CHAPTER

The History of Purple Dyes

After the success of mauvene, William Henry Perkins went on to create several other colours from coal tar. Professor Hoffman created his own version of an analine dye called rosene which possibly made William smile or maybe make him a little bit annoyed. Lots of chemists started looking into coal tar byproducts and started thinking about the kind of colours that they could create. And it turned out that coal tar as well as creating a purple could also create greens, yellows, blacks, browns - spawned this whole industry of bright dyes. This created kind of a fashion trend for wearing what we would consider now really garish colour combinations because these dyes were very cheap.
