i remember my mother saying to me at night time that life is short, johnny, what difference are you going to make in this world? And i really feel that way, and that's very much how i live. I think there's a certain religious or mystical tradition, which is the opposite view, that you're not going to succeed. Life is fundamentally frail, you know, vulnerable. It's suffering. But there's something to be learned from that experience, if you can bear it. There's a kind of meaning that can open up in that sublime pain. That was very deep and very moving. Maybe by thinking it that's why i'm trying to change things
