The Death of Eliech
Tolstoy is bringing us into the death of Eliech and his alienation from those around him. This is the state he is in when he comes to apprehend, let's say another way of living or a different principle according to which life can be ordered to interrupt here. The first part of the story is about his struggle to not go there. And then there comes a moment when he cannot not go there and things come to a standstill... So where is he going? He's going back to his childhood. That's very important. And he builds from there.
