In the book of job, it does appear that satan is serving god. God explicitly gives him permission to damage his live stock and family members. Thet our picture of the adver ay is really developed in what is known as second temple judaism. And when we read the new testament, satan is the figure that we know. He is actively fighting against the forces of good. We are constantly presented with, too often, opposing ideas. Now we have situations in which we're choosing between good better best.
