The literal sense of rain check, which is an americanism, is first found in the 18 eighties in reference to a baseball game. The purchaser had no influence over if it rained too heavily so that the game has to be postponed. So in that case, when a game was postponed because of the weather, the bad weather, the ticket holder could omback for another game and just show his rain check. That's exactly what this idiom means. We need to delay or just push back our plans because something happened. Maybe you just are feeling tired, or youre feeling sick, so you need to change your plans. Let's take a rain check.
