Body mass index (BMI) was invented in the 19th century by a Belgian scientist named Adolf Quetellet. A BMI between about 20 and 25 is considered normal; 25 to 30 is overweight. "My body is just a less comfortable place to inhabit when my BMI gets well above 30 or so," he says.
