The Story of Winthrop Bell's Internment in Germany
Rulaben where Winthrop Bell was housed sort of started off like this. It was kind of a brutal place. Guards would beat up prisoners kind of randomly. But early in 1915, things started to change. A lot of British people who were in Germany for various purposes or diplomatic purposes weren't official diplomats. So they had all kinds of organizational and cultural talents. They managed to convince the powers that be at Rulaben to let themselves organize the camp life. The guards let them do it because they found ways to profit from the camp economy.
