The Difference Between Prediction and Control and Understanding

For you personally to have a satisfactory understanding of how language works in biological cognition in humans, does it matter how the brain does it? Yes. But I don't want to model general relativity where I have to know the position of every atom in the universe to know whether my model is correct. That would give me prediction and control, but it would give me no understanding of the principles of the system. People are actually doing inference when they write their papers and think about it. They are in their head trying to glean categories and first principles. It's the human urge that underlies all science which has to be refined and honed before it can become science.
