What's the Screen Memory?
Todd McGowan: I love this essay for the way that it cuts against our common sensical way of thinking about screens. He says most people think we put up screens to protect us from trauma, even if they're not Freudian. But what's fascinating here is, he says, it's a screen memory - and Freud insists that it is actually a true memory. It's an actual memory where you've picked up something that's innocuous and remembered it because of its proximity to something or the way thatIt stands in for something that's not innocuous, that has a traumatic charge to it.
