Emergency Medicine Cases

CHAPTER

Is There a Rub in Pericarditis?

In a person with obvious bercoditis, it'll be present for a short while and then disappear. And the patient is still sick, but the rub has gone away. My guess is that probably it's because now there's a little bit of fluid in the par al space. It really sounds like somebody's rubbing two pieces of sandpaper together. You hear three sounds at the left sternal border with the patient leaning forward. That's how i would do it operationally. I've also heard about listening during end expiration, like you asked the patient to hold the a at the end of e in me - absolutely. If you don't hear a rub, not really helpful.
