A lot of research is just like not applicable in industry. There's a disconnect between what the researcher thinks is going to happen if the idea is working and what people want in industry. In programming languages, it's one of those fields where on the one hand you want to support basic science. But programming languages is kind of in a weird spot because there are so many claims of relevance.
