The Effect of Downtown New York in the 1950s and 60s

I think that a lot of the people who were downtown in New York City in the 1950s and 60s, they had to really achieve an escape velocity from mainstream America. And like you said, the effect in many ways was quite spectacular. They formed this group of artists and poets that I think was new and was unique.
