The second elizabethan age turned out to be nothing like the fantasies that were expressed at the time of the coronation in 19 53. But it would be quite wrong to portray this as a period of national decline from empire to offshore island. In most respects, the united kingdom is a more tolerant, richer, more liberal, more diverse and less complaisent society than it was back then. And queen el Elizabeth must take her share of credit for going with the flow and helping the country along the path of change.
