Five December's by Jonathan Moore
Merrick Garland recommends five December's by James Kestrel. The book is set in 1941 in Honolulu where a police detective is investigating the murder of a kid. And this investigation unexpectedly leads him to go to Japan to look up somebody who is in to track down a clue. He is in Japan when Pearl Harbor is bombed, he then must go into hiding and he spends five years in Japan. It's an extraordinary book. I don't even know how I ended up reading it. Is it new? No, it came out last year. But of course, everything is new. One of the great advantages of the e-book era is that nothing goes out of print.
